The Christmas-Morning Breakfast Board

The Christmas-Morning Breakfast Board

Christmas-morning maths is unforgiving: presents from six, lunch prep from ten, and somewhere in between, a houseful of people who need feeding without anyone actually cooking. The answer is a board. One big, generous spread in the middle of the table, everyone builds their own bowl, and the kitchen stays clean for the main event. Twenty minutes of arranging, and it photographs like you planned it for weeks.

The anchors: Nosh almond & coconut granola for the crunch, the big 450 g jar of Hunnie raw WA honey for the drizzle — it’s Christmas, buy the big jar — and strawberry flavour pearls to turn plain yoghurt into the bowl the kids fight over. Little bursting spheres of strawberry on snow-white yoghurt: it’s the closest breakfast gets to unwrapping something.

Method

  1. Put the yoghurt in your biggest, best bowl at the centre of the board. Swirl the top with the back of a spoon, drizzle with honey, and finish with a generous spoonful of strawberry pearls. That bowl is the Christmas tree of this arrangement.
  2. Pour the granola into a bowl alongside with a proper scoop in it — box on the table is not the mood we’re after today.
  3. Fruit around the edges: mango cheeks scored into crosshatch, cherries in an abundant pile, passionfruit halved, berries scattered where there are gaps.
  4. Fill the remaining gaps with granola bites and warm croissants. A board should look like it’s about to overflow; restraint is for February.
  5. Honey jar on the board, dipper in, coffee poured. Everyone builds their own bowl, and nobody asks you for anything for a full half hour. Merry Christmas.

The whole thing assembles while the kettle boils, and it scales to any headcount — more yoghurt, more fruit, same twenty minutes. For the other end of the day, the same strawberry pearls have a second shift waiting on our pavlova with salted caramel & strawberry pearls, and the granola shelf plus the raw honey range will keep the board tradition running well into the new year.
