Chai tea, often simply called chai, is a traditional Indian beverage made by brewing black tea with a blend of aromatic spices, milk, and a sweetener. The word chai actually means “tea” in Hindi, so the phrase “chai tea” technically translates to “tea tea,” but it has become a common term internationally to describe this spiced tea drink.
- Key Elements of Chai
- Black Tea Base: Usually strong varieties like Assam.
- Masala (Spice Blend): Common spices include cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves, and black pepper, though recipes vary widely.
- Milk: Traditionally whole milk, which adds body and creaminess.
- Sweetener: Sugar, jaggery, honey, or other sweeteners to balance the spices.
What It Tastes Like
Chai is warm, spicy, aromatic, and comforting—often described as earthy, sweet, and creamy with a layered, fragrant complexity.
Cultural Background
In India, chai is a daily ritual and a social experience. It’s sold everywhere—from home kitchens to street-side chai wallahs—and each region or household may have its own preferred spice mix.
