Japanese Hojicha is a type of roasted green tea that originates from Japan. Unlike most green teas, which are steamed, dried, and kept green, Hojicha undergoes an extra step: the leaves are roasted over high heat. This process gives it a distinct flavour and aroma that sets it apart from typical green teas.
What makes Hojicha special?
Warm, roasted aroma – nutty, toasty, sometimes slightly caramel-like.
Smooth, mellow flavour – less grassy than standard green teas, with a soft sweetness and low bitterness.
Naturally low in caffeine – the roasting reduces caffeine content, making it a calming option, even in the evening.
Beautiful reddish-brown colour – a result of the roasting process.
How it’s made?
Hojicha is usually made from bancha, sencha, or kukicha (twig tea). The leaves or stems are fire-roasted in a porcelain pot, traditionally over charcoal. Roasting transforms the tea’s character, creating that signature warm and cozy profile.
Why people love it?
It’s comforting, gentle on the palate, and versatile – enjoy it straight, as a latte, iced, or even used in desserts.
