African rooibos tea—often simply called rooibos—is a naturally caffeine-free herbal infusion made from the leaves of the Aspalathus linearis plant, a shrub native to the Cederberg region of South Africa.
Here’s what makes it special:
Origin & Harvesting
Grown almost exclusively in South Africa, where the unique climate and sandy soil create its distinct flavour.
Traditionally fermented (oxidised) to develop its characteristic reddish colour and warm aroma. There is also a green, unfermented version that’s lighter and fresher.
Flavour Profile
Naturally sweet with honeyed, nutty, and sometimes slightly earthy notes.
Smooth and low in tannins, meaning it never tastes bitter.
Health & Wellness Benefits
Caffeine-free — ideal for evenings or for anyone avoiding caffeine.
Rich in antioxidants (including aspalathin and quercetin).
Naturally low in tannins and free from oxalic acid, making it gentle on the stomach.
How It’s Enjoyed
Can be brewed hot or cold.
Delicious on its own or blended with spices, vanilla, citrus, or herbs.
Often used as a base for rooibos lattes due to its naturally sweet profile.
In short, African rooibos tea is a comforting, naturally sweet, and antioxidant-rich herbal tea cherished both in South Africa and around the world.
